When President Abraham Lincoln signed the “Yosemite Grant” in 1864, the Yosemite region in eastern California became the first area the U.S. federal government set aside for protection and public use. The long history of conservation has preserved old-growth forests, prevented overgrazing, sustained over 160 rare plant species, and halted the logging of Giant Sequoias within the 700,000 acre park.
Despite local conservation efforts, Yosemite sees the consequences of global environmental changes. Ozone pollution has weakened Giant Sequoias, lowering their resistance to disease and insect infestation. Scientists have also noticed that over the past 100 years, pikas—mountain relatives of the rabbit—have lost more and more of their habitat, moving 2,000 feet up the mountain sides as they search for cooler places to live.
