While Sir Isaac Newton theorized that space and time were independent of each other, Einstein concluded that the two are inextricably linked.

The two main tenets of Einstein’s special theory of relativity are:

the laws of physics are the same for all non-accelerating observers

the speed of light in a vacuum is constant regardless of the speed of the observer

Consider a car speeding down the highway, heading north at 55 mph. When it turns northeast to merge onto another highway, it suddenly isn’t traveling north at 55 mph anymore since some of that motion has been shifted east during the merge.

The same principle applies to space and time. For example, a parked car may not be traveling through space – but it is traveling through time with each passing second and minute. If the car is parked and quickly speeds away, some of that motion through time is diverted into travel through space.

It is important to note the second tenet – the speed of light is constant – because it means combined motion of any object through space and its motion through time is always equal to the speed of light. In the analogy, this means that the car cannot accelerate as it moves northeast to maintain a northward velocity of 55 mph. Therefore, the speed of light is essentially a speed limit.

This relationship also means that time slows down for the driver of a moving car relative to time for a stationary observer. This might seem outlandish since a cross-country plane trip doesn’t slow aging, but the idea of time slowing down was proven in 1971, when Joseph Hafele and Richard Keating flew atomic clocks around the world on a commercial jet. After the pilots landed, their clocks were compared to identical clocks left on the ground. It was determined that time had indeed slowed for the flying clocks – by a few hundred billionths of a second.

Therefore, since light has all of its motion being used traveling through space – time has stopped for anything traveling at the speed of light.

Einstein’s special theory of relativity also showed that speed of light squared (c2), which is a very large number, and a small amount of mass (m) – translates into a huge amount of energy (E). Through the equation E=mc2, Einstein could then explain the enormous energy released by massive stars.

At the time Einstein published his theory, he was unsure if there was an accessible physical mechanism by which that reaction can take place on Earth. Unfortunately, those of use living in the nuclear age know that there are several physical processes capable of releasing massive quantities of energy. In fact, when Einstein found out decades later that his work would be used to make a bomb – he wrote a letter to President Franklin Roosevelt, warning about the power of such a device.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0604/3041/8120/products/Theory-of-Special-Relativity_1_3414462a-bfed-43e0-94a2-3475920e6761.jpg?v=1664999150
general-relativity
General Relativity

First published by Albert Einstein in 1905, special relativity describes the relationship between space and time. In 1915, Einstein would publish his general theory of relativity, which includes the effects of acceleration.

The main type of acceleration Einstein was concerned with was gravity, which can be simply described as the force of attraction between two objects accelerates falling objects. Here on Earth, gravity accelerates us toward the ground – but each individual also tugs back at Earth, albeit with significantly less force.

Based on the second tenet of his special relativity theory regarding the speed of light, Einstein saw space and time as interconnected – meaning events that occur at the same time for one observer could occur at different times for an observer in another space. He expanded on special relativity by concluding that massive objects, like planets and stars, actually bend space-time the way a bowling ball might sink into a trampoline. A smaller, lighter ball rolled onto the trampoline would become drawn into the indentation made by the bowling ball – in the same way that a massive star’s gravity draws in smaller objects.

To illustrate the bend in space-time, consider an experiment onboard a ship floating in outer space where a laser beam is fired the length of the cabin interior. An observer inside the cabin will see the laser beam as a straight line.

Now consider the same ship and experiment, but in freefall toward the Earth. The astronaut will still see the laser beam traveling in a straight line, but an observer on the ground would see the laser beam curve as it travels the length of the cabin. This is because the start and end points on the walls of the ship are still the same for both observers, but with the ship falling relative to the observer on the ground – the beam would seem to curve in mid-air as the passes through the cabin.

Einstein assumed that light travels in a straight a line as possible so how could the laser appear to bend? The apparent motion of the laser light could be better understood if we assume that the space-time through which it traveled were curved.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0604/3041/8120/products/Theory-of-General-Relativity_1_3355fe55-754e-41dd-ae04-63a8fdc18d55.jpg?v=1664998332
death-valley-national-park
Death Valley National Park

“Death Valley” may seem like an obvious name for the hottest, driest location in North America—a place where, some years, no rain falls at all and where the temperature can reach 134°F. Sea levels, which are now rising much faster in south Florida than they ever have over the past 3,200 years, have transformed fresh water marshes into saline pools, and it is unclear whether animals and plants will be able to survive the change.
